Come On Sisters!
The greatest love that Whitney sang about,
Is finally happening to me.
After 50 years with as many self-help books,
I’m really beginning to see.
It all begins from the inside out.
That much I know to be true.
For the person you should love and respect the most,
Is that woman looking in the mirror at you.
It’s something the patriarchal world we live in,
Didn’t want us to know.
Because if we’re not lost, and forever searching for ourselves,
All that money we’re less likely to throw,
At the self-improvement gimmicks and promises
Telling us we’re not enough to be who we are.
But what if we told them to stick them where the sun doesn’t shine?
Because without them, we can really go far.
It doesn’t mean we love our partners any less,
Or shirk responsibility for relationships we’ve known.
It just means we’re no longer last on the list,
Giving ourselves the same love to others we’ve shown.
Miley had the right idea when buying herself flowers,
And unashamedly holding her own hand.
Because when sisters begin to look out for themselves,
In their own power they truly can stand.
So come with me, follow Annie and Aretha out of the kitchen,
Put those damned cooking utensils back on the shelves.
And to the beat of our own drums, let’s dance and sing.
Come on sisters, we can bloody well do it for ourselves.
A poem inspired by and dedicated to the many empowering women I’ve encountered in my life:
